“Tree surgery” and “tree removal” are often used interchangeably by homeowners, yet the two services sit at opposite ends of the arboricultural spectrum. Knowing which one your tree needs can save you hundreds of pounds and preserve Bristol’s treasured canopy.
What Counts as Tree Surgery?
Tree surgery is any targeted intervention intended to keep the tree standing and thriving. Common procedures include:
> Crown reduction: educing overall height and spread while retaining natural shape.
> Crown thinning: removing select interior branches to improve light and reduce wind-sail.
> Crown lifting: raising the canopy above driveways or pavements for clearance.
> Pollarding & formative pruning: encouraging desirable growth patterns.
Performed to BS3998 standards, these works relieve stress on limbs, minimise risk and improve aesthetics without compromising the tree’s long-term health.
What Is Tree Removal?
Tree removal – also called felling – means taking the tree down to ground level, often followed by stump grinding. It’s the last resort when:
> Structural decay or Ash Dieback makes retention unsafe.
> Roots are undermining foundations or drains.
> Redevelopment space is required and alternatives are exhausted.
Environmental Impact
A mature beech sequesters roughly a tonne of CO₂ over its lifetime. Remove it and you lose a natural air-filter and shade provider. When removal is unavoidable, we plant two native saplings for every mature tree felled, helping Bristol meet its 2030 net-zero goal.
Decisison Checklist
1. Obtain a professional tree-health report.
2. Factor in property value – street trees can add 5-15 % to sale prices.
3. Confirm TPO or conservation-area status (see our permission guide).
4. Weigh ongoing maintenance vs. one-off removal.
If in doubt, request a free survey; we’ll always recommend the least-invasive option that keeps you safe.
