What is crown thinning?
Crown thinning is the removal of a portion of smaller branches, usually at the outer crown, to produce a uniform density of foliage around an evenly spaced branch structure. It is usually confined to broad-leaved tree species.
It is important that foliage is removed systematically throughout the tree during this process to ensure there are no adverse effects on the tree. A skilled team of arborists will do this and also work to ensure that crown thinning doesn’t alter the overall size or shape of the tree.
How do I know when a tree needs its crown thinned?
Crown thinning is when an experienced tree surgeon carefully removes branches and foliage from a tree’s canopy to improve the overall health of the tree. If you’re unsure whether your tree is in need of this, there are a number of tell tale signs you can look for.

If you’re inspecting a tree yourself, then you can look for crossing or rubbing branches. While you would expect to see some of this occurring – especially on a larger tree – the damage from this activity can cause damage, giving pests and diseases the opportunity to attack the tree.
Overcrowded growth
When branches in the crown grow too close together, the overcrowding can lead to poor air circulation around the tree, which can also lead to diseases or infections.
